Featured Grants: California Healthcare

The healthcare landscape across the United States varies from state to state. With nuances including policy decisions, socioeconomic factors, healthcare infrastructure, public health priorities, and funding constraints, a tailored approach is required. For local governments, healthcare is one of the most essential priorities to ensure the wellbeing of their communities and residents.

Despite being a leader in healthcare innovation and having a strong infrastructure, California’s system struggles with access to healthcare, workforce shortages, health disparities, and high costs. Healthcare grant funding plays a pivotal role in addressing these challenges and solving critical problems within the healthcare system.

Grant funding enables California’s leaders to tackle pressing public health challenges such as enhancing access to healthcare services. California has a number of underserved populations, with a diverse demographic profile that includes rural communities, low-income families, immigrants, and other vulnerable groups who often face barriers to healthcare access. Additionally, grant funding is instrumental in developing the healthcare workforce, which is key for improving quality and access of care. Grant funding equips public sector teams with the tools and strategies to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery, ensuring more equitable access to quality care.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

The federal government has created a grant program designed to increase the nursing workforce in underserved and rural areas to solve the problem of nurse shortages, particularly within acute and long-term care settings. Given the variety of underserved and non-metropolitan communities in California, this grant program would contribute to the growth and development of California’s healthcare workforce. This program focuses on training additional associate and baccalaureate degree nursing students to enhance nursing education and clinical practice, thereby expanding the workforce and improving access in these critical care environments. The main goals are as follows:

  • Increasing Nursing Student Enrollment, Retention, and Graduation: The program aims to boost the number of nursing students enrolled in associate and/or baccalaureate nursing degree programs, improve retention rates, and ensure more students successfully graduate from these programs.
  • Enhancing Specialized Training in Acute and Long-Term Care Settings: The grant aims to provide additional specialized education and training opportunities for nursing students focused on patient care in acute and long-term care settings. This includes fostering clinical excellence and quality improvement through partnerships with clinical sites.
  • Expanding the Nursing Workforce in Acute and Long-Term Care: The program seeks to increase the number of undergraduate nurses employed in acute and long-term care settings post-graduation. This goal aims to address workforce shortages in these critical healthcare environments by preparing students for careers in these fields.
